What's special about subjects who confuse red and green is that blue and yellow colors appear remarkably vivid to them, compared with red and green.
The search for chromatic vision deficiencies using the Ishihara Test Album - 38 plates is based on this particularity.
- Plate number 1 is the introductory plate, and anyone can read 12, even color-blind people. This is followed by 6 groups of 4 consecutive plates.
- Boards 2 to 5 use the same color confusion. Normally, numbers different from those perceived by normal subjects are visible in the case of red-green dichromy.
- Boards 6 to 9 are of the same value, and explore a confusion between red and green, very similar to that tested for the previous group, but with a different background.
- Plates 10 to 13 are based on a blue-green-orange confusion. Individuals with the disease perceive nothing.
- Plates 14 to 17 are very similar to plates 6 to 9, but with a slightly different background. And, as in the previous series, color-blind subjects perceive nothing.
- Plates 18 to 21 are constructed in a different way. Unlike the previous ones, normal or achromatic subjects perceive nothing, while dichromats can perceive or distinguish digits.
- Plates 22 to 25 are crucial, as their purpose is to identify an individual as suffering from protanopia or deuteranopia.
Plates 1 to 25 of the Ishihara Test Album - 38 plates - must be recognized in no more than 3 seconds. If the subject doesn't know his or her digits, we'll use plates 26 to 28, on which the sinuous line between the two X's is traced with a paintbrush in a maximum of 10 seconds.
It's not always necessary to use the whole series of plates. For example, plates 22, 23, 24 and 25 need not be presented to the subject if the purpose of the examination is simply to select subjects with normal color vision from those with dyschromatopsia.
In simple screening cases, the presentation of 6 plates from the Ishihara Test Album - 38 plates - may be sufficient. If the subject is reluctant to read these 6 plates, the complete examination can be performed. Alternatively, the order of the plates can be varied if it appears that a simulator is being used.
