What is the purpose of a horizontal prism bar?
A horizontal prism bar is an orthoptic/optometric instrument used to measure and quantify horizontal ocular deviation (exo- or eso-deviation) and assess fusion/binocularity.
Main uses :
Measure the magnitude of horizontal strabismus (in prismatic dioptres) by placing prisms of increasing power in front of an eye until the deviation is neutralized.
Evaluate phoria (latent deviation) and manifest deviation using the alternating cover test.
Test fusion capacity and determine the direction of deviation (base-in = exo, base-out = eso).
Help prescribe corrective prisms for diplopia.
Brief instructions for use:
Orient base-in or base-out prisms according to the presumed direction of deviation.
Add prisms progressively until sclero-conjunctival displacement or diplopia disappears.
Read the prism diopter value indicated on the bar.
