A Berens vertical prism bar is used to detect, quantify, and test vertical eye deviations (hypertropia/hypotropia) and to assess vertical fusion.
Main uses:
Measuring the magnitude of vertical strabismus in prismatic diopters by placing base-up or base-down prisms in front of one eye until the deviation is neutralized.
Assessing vertical phoria (latent deviation) and manifest deviation using the alternating cover test.
Test vertical fusion amplitudes and determine the direction of the deviation (base-up = hyperopia in the unaffected eye or hypotropia in the tested eye, depending on the direction).
Assist in prescribing vertical prisms to correct vertical diplopia.
Brief Instructions:
Select base-up or base-down depending on the presumed direction of the deviation.
Add prisms gradually until the rectification movement or diplopia disappears, then read the value on the scale.
